Tango walk. The most basic and important movement pattern in tango.

Basic Walking Mechanics

Step Anatomy

Every step has 4 phases:

  1. Projection - Leg extension
  2. Transfer - Weight shift
  3. Collection - Feet coming together
  4. Preparation - Ready for next step

Forward Walk (Caminata Adelante)

For the Leader

Technique:

  1. Your chest determines direction
  2. Push from hip
  3. Heel-ball-toe sequence
  4. Natural step length
  5. Legs pass each other

Common Mistakes:

  • ❌ Starting with shoulders
  • ❌ Steps too long
  • ❌ Bouncing
  • ❌ Not sliding feet

For the Follower

Technique:

  1. Feel the lead with your chest
  2. Toe-ball-heel sequence
  3. Leg extends, body follows
  4. Axis toward partner
  5. Stay grounded until the last moment

Common Mistakes:

  • ❌ Stepping without waiting for lead
  • ❌ Starting with heel
  • ❌ Bouncing up

Backward Walk (Caminata Atras)

For the Leader

Technique:

  1. Chest turns backward
  2. Leg reaches back
  3. Toe-ball-heel sequence
  4. Axis maintained
  5. Floor awareness important!

Caution

When leader goes backward, collision risk is high. Check behind frequently or use sparingly if possible.

For the Follower

Technique:

  1. Wait for the lead
  2. Leg reaches back
  3. Body stays stable
  4. Weight fully transferred
  5. Feet collect

Side Step (Paso al Costado)

Technique

  1. Hip opens to direction
  2. Leg extends sideways
  3. Weight transfers
  4. Feet stay parallel
  5. Shoulders level

In modern tango, this pattern is less rigid. Understand the essence, then dance freely.


Walking Systems

Parallel System

  • Leader and follower use opposite feet
  • Leader left = Follower right
  • Natural, basic system

Cross System

  • Leader and follower use same-side feet
  • Leader left = Follower left
  • For special figures

Exercises for Quality Walking

Exercise 1: Slow Motion Caminata

  1. Complete each step in 4 seconds
  2. Feel each phase separately
  3. Check in front of mirror
  4. 10 minutes daily

Exercise 2: Walking to Wall

  1. Walk toward the wall
  2. You should be able to stop when your nose is close to wall
  3. Test axis control
  4. Do it walking backward too

Exercise 3: Line Walking

  1. Put tape on floor
  2. Walk on the line
  3. Feet should follow the line
  4. Keep hips parallel

Exercise 4: Music Walking

  1. Play tango music
  2. Walk only on beats
  3. Try different orchestras
  4. Feel the rhythm differences
